about
Written by Rachel Newton
This tune is inspired by a story about changelings that I've come across in several different guises. Here are two I like best -
1. Faeries took a woman's child and left a changeling in its place. He ate constantly. One day she pretended to leave the house and watched him through the window. He began to play the chanter. An old man told her to take him to the shore and leave him on a rock as the tide came in. The baby took on the form of an old fairy man and she refused to rescue him until the faeries brought her own child back.
2. A tailor passing through a village met a couple who had an unruly baby. He offered to look after the baby while they went to the kirk. The baby offered him a dram the first visit and played him a tune on a chanter the next visit. He told the parents to get a bit of peat from the fire and they approached the baby with it causing him to take fright and disappear up the chimney.

Love the complexity of this track and the rising and falling of the violins, and the texture. Makes me want to dance.
Thank you so much for this album. I really love it, and find it really inspiring my own work on the Witchcraft Trials ❤️ tararosehip

Listening to this album's rich, beautiful melodies and spirited performances feels like seeing a fantastical other-world emerge from the Earth itself. The emotions running through "A Mermaid at Fearn" are so complex and genuine it could convince anyone that mermaids are really out there. Gyakuten
